IAEA experts examine Uzbekistan’s nuclear infrastructure
The Uzatom Agency is conducting the second phase of the IAEA’s Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) mission.
The implementation, results, and key priorities of Uzbekistan’s nuclear energy development program were examined. Uzatom representatives and the Nuclear Power Plant Construction Directorate offered detailed answers to the IAEA experts’ inquiries.
The discussions centered on maintaining radiation safety, expanding the national electricity infrastructure, and training skilled personnel for the nuclear sector.
The review covered measures to enhance radiological monitoring systems, bolster state regulation and oversight in the sector, and modernize energy infrastructure. Additionally, the country’s preparedness to incorporate the upcoming nuclear power plant into the national energy system was discussed.
Particular attention was given to strengthening human resources capacity. The experts positively evaluated the efforts to train specialists for the nuclear energy sector and improve their qualifications. They highlighted that educational programs in collaboration with the IAEA, along with the development of a talent pool within specialized organizations, are of significant strategic importance.
Much of the discussion centered on public engagement, environmental protection, and physical nuclear security. The public hearings in Farish district, efforts to raise awareness, and strategies to boost the use of local content in construction received high praise.
Experts recognize Uzbekistan’s progress in developing its nuclear infrastructure to meet IAEA standards, enhancing physical protection, and expanding international cooperation as significant accomplishments.
