How are the UN’s goals for gender equality being put into action?
Goal 5 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
The Senate hosted a roundtable titled “Priority tasks for ensuring gender equality and empowering women”.
The legal and institutional bases for promoting gender equality continue to be reinforced across the country. Uzbekistan’s updated Constitution affirms equal rights and opportunities for both women and men. Additionally, laws such as “On guarantees of equal rights and opportunities for women and men” and “On the protection of women from harassment and violence” have been enacted to enhance legal protections for women.
As part of the Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality by 2030, government bodies, local Councils, and civil society institutions are actively implementing comprehensive measures. Women’s participation in parliament and local Councils is growing, and more girls are enrolling in higher education. Additionally, women are increasingly involved in entrepreneurship, science, culture, and sports.
Senate members, representatives from the Committee on Family and Women, higher education institutions, research organizations, and the spirituality and enlightenment sector attended the event.
Participants focused on empowering women and nurturing their leadership abilities, aligning with Goal 5 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. They aimed to prevent harassment and violence while challenging gender stereotypes within society. They also proposed measures to promote gender equality and increase women’s active involvement in public life.
