Uzbekistan and Tajikistan leaders visit Bukhara landmarks
The President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, together with the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, became familiar with the Ark Fortress, the Poi-Kalon and Labi-Hovuz ensembles.
The Ark Fortress is the ancient citadel of Bukhara, which served as the residence of rulers for nearly 1,500 years. Its oldest structures date back to the 4th-3rd centuries BC, while its current appearance was mostly shaped in the 16th century. In the past, it was essentially a “city within a city”, including palaces, administrative buildings, and an arsenal. It was noted that during the Middle Ages, prominent thinkers like Rudaki, Ibn Sina, and later Omar Khayyam lived and worked here.

The Poi-Kalon ensemble is highly significant as one of Bukhara’s most impressive and renowned architectural complexes. It features the famous minaret, which is 45.6 meters tall and was built in 1127, the congregational mosque constructed in 1514 that can hold 12,000 people at once, and the Mir Arab madrasah, regarded as one of the most respected Islamic educational institutions. The ensemble is especially grand with the 288-domed gallery surrounding the mosque courtyard, numerous columns, and its distinctive acoustics.

The Labi-Hovuz ensemble is one of the few well-preserved medieval squares in Bukhara, with an ancient reservoir at its center. For centuries, locals gathered here to relax, talk, and trade. The ensemble includes the Kukeldash madrasah, the Nodir Divanbegi madrasah, and the khanqah.

The leader of Tajikistan carefully examined the artistic harmony of each monument, samples of national craftsmanship, and historical exhibits. The distinguished guest was given detailed information about the features of the architectural style, as well as the meaning of the ornaments and symbols.

These historic sites, highlighting Bukhara’s rich history, its role on the Great Silk Road, and its significant contributions to science and culture, left a lasting impression on the Tajikistan delegation.
