An international workshop titled “Identification and classification of geological heritage sites in Kitab and Shakhrisabz areas, and raising public awareness of their geological significance” was held at the initiative of the Ministry of Mining Industry and Geology of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

“This international event was aimed at developing UNESCO Global Geoparks in our country, particularly the establishment of the Kitab Geopark in Kitab district of Kashkadarya region and studying existing challenges”, said Azamat Akobirov, Head of the Ministry’s Press Service. “The workshop was attended by UNESCO experts from Iran, Türkiye, Switzerland, as well as local specialists”.

UNESCO experts met with Feruza Khamidova, First Deputy Minister of Mining Industry and Geology, to discuss opportunities to study the region’s geological heritage and establish a geopark.
