In New Delhi, India, the twentieth session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is underway.

During the session, held on 8-13 December this year, the nomination submitted by the Republic of Uzbekistan, “Art of crafting and playing kobyz”, was unanimously approved for inscription on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

The inclusion of the kobyz and zhyrau performance art on the UNESCO list represents international recognition of their value as part of the historical, spiritual, and cultural heritage.

As noted in the Committee’s decision, the kobyz, made and played in the Karakalpakstan region, is a traditional string instrument with an arc-shaped body and two horsehair strings. The body is covered in leather and features detailed decorations made from local wood, such as mulberry or apricot. A special bow, also made from horsehair, is used to play the instrument. The kobyz is designed to be portable, making it easy to carry during long travels, reflecting its ties to a nomadic lifestyle. It is performed by storytellers known as ‘zhyrau’, primarily men, who tell epic tales using a distinctive style of throat singing.

Furthermore, this decision will support scientific research on the art of zhyrau performance, the preservation of master – apprentice traditions, the development of new educational programs, and the expansion of international cooperation.
