Altay fur skis

The Altay Mountains, located in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, are rightly considered the homeland and one of the oldest centers of skiing.

The snowy climate and rich natural resources have shaped the way of life of the local population for centuries. Traditional crafts have been preserved here from generation to generation, including the making of fur skis from birch wood, horsehide, and wool. These unique products embody centuries of experience of living in conditions of snow and ice, reflecting the distinct identity of these people.

Tradition keeper Slanbek Shakhish has mastered the technique of making fur skis since his youth. More than half a century of experience allows him to create remarkable products: the skis not only preserve their traditional appearance but also meet modern market requirements.

In recent years, interest in fur skis has grown noticeably. On average, 20-30 pairs of skis are sold annually. Tourists and skiing enthusiasts come here not only to purchase them but also to see the manufacturing process firsthand.

Visitors actively share photos and impressions on social media, helping popularize Altay fur skis and promoting the region as a promising winter tourism destination. More and more foreign visitors are showing interest in this unique craft.

Slanbek Shakhish shares the secrets of his craft with young people to preserve this rare tradition for future generations.
