Architectural Monuments – Our Cultural Heritage
In Bukhara region, practical efforts have begun to enhance cultural heritage sites and their surroundings, create better conditions for residents and tourists, address existing challenges, and explore new opportunities.
It is important to note that these large-scale initiatives are being carried out in preparation for the International Biennale of Contemporary Art, which is scheduled to take place in the historic center of Bukhara from September to November this year.

The Biennale will showcase cutting-edge achievements in global architecture and art and will be the first event organized in Central Asia. It will be held under the auspices of UNESCO and managed by an International Council that includes representatives from leading artistic organizations in countries such as the UAE, France, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia. The renowned UAE architectural firm Waiwai Design has been commissioned to develop the architectural concepts for the event.

To study the ongoing work in the historic part of Bukhara in preparation for the upcoming International Biennale of Contemporary Art, the region was visited by Aziz Mannapov, Deputy Chairman of the Art and Culture Development Foundation and under the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan, Wael Al Awar, founder of Waiwai Design and curator of the biennale, along with international architectural experts.

To preserve cultural heritage and architectural monuments and prevent structural deterioration along key tourist routes in Bukhara’s historic center, plans are in place to construct a stormwater drainage system, upgrade communication networks, and implement other infrastructure improvements. These projects will be developed based on Khiva’s experience, involving international and local specialists, scholars, historians, and experienced designers.
