A senator participated in monitoring the nationwide referendum in Kazakhstan
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agrarian, Water Management Issues and Ecology Anvar Tuychiyev, as part of the Mission of International Observers of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS, took part in monitoring the republican referendum on the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan in a new edition.
Mr. Tuychiyev noted that one of the key innovations of the draft Constitution was the establishment of a unicameral parliament – the Kurultai, consisting of 145 deputies and endowed with new, expanded powers. The formation of the Kurultai is based on a proportional electoral system, and deputies serve five-year terms.

The draft Constitution also proposes establishing the office of vice president and creating a new platform for nationwide dialogue – the People’s Council of Kazakhstan.

The senator monitored the process of preparation and conduct of the republican referendum in Astana and the Akmola region, and also visited polling stations.

As part of the referendum, meetings with Chairman of the Senate of Kazakhstan Maulen Ashimbayev and Chairperson of the Constitutional Court of Kazakhstan Elvira Azimova analyzed the process of preparation for the nationwide referendum on the adoption of the new Constitution, and discussed the significance of the Basic Law in the development of the country’s political system and state institutions.
