International efforts to strengthen the protection of the striped hyena, initiated by Uzbekistan
Following the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), important decisions were made to strengthen global efforts to preserve biodiversity. Specifically, about 40 species and populations of animals, including rare and endangered ones, were added and updated in Appendices I and II of the Convention.
At the initiative of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Republic of Tajikistan, the striped hyena has been added to the Convention’s lists. This decision aims to ensure international protection for this species.
The striped hyena is a rare and vulnerable species at risk of extinction. Its population decline is linked to habitat destruction, direct human persecution, and a decrease in its food sources.
Additionally, following Uzbekistan’s proposal, the striped hyena has been added to the Central Asian Mammals Initiative (CAMI), establishing a foundation for joint international efforts to protect the species and carry out environmental programs.
