Japanese specialists to be involved in greening arid regions
During the Eighth GEF Assembly, Erkin Mukhitdinov, Director of the Agency for Expanding Forests and Green Zones and Combating Desertification under the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, met with Yasuaki Nagaishi, Executive Vice President of the Japanese Organization for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement (OISCA).
During the talks, information was presented on the large-scale work underway in Uzbekistan to expand green zones, prevent desertification, and mitigate the negative effects of climate change. In particular, efforts to create new forest areas and protect existing ones were discussed.

Following the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed to strengthen cooperation in environmental protection and forestry.
Under the memorandum, plans are in place to create green cover in the country’s arid regions, in collaboration with Japanese specialists, to prevent desertification and improve air quality. Cooperation will also be established for the selection, cultivation of seedlings, and adaptation of rare tree species to local climatic conditions.

The parties agreed to exchange scientific experience in forestry, improve specialists’ qualifications, and jointly organize seminars, training sessions, and forums.
