International cooperation in human rights protection is growing
As previously reported, Feruza Eshmatova, the Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis for Human Rights (Ombudsman), participated in the annual meeting of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) in Geneva.
As part of the event, Ms. Eshmatova held several bilateral meetings. Notably, negotiations took place with Agi Veres, UNDP Geneva Director, Alyson Kilpatrick, Secretary of the Global Alliance and Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, Kieren Fitzpatrick, Executive Director of the Asia-Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions, and others.

Discussions covered issues of expanding international cooperation in human rights protection, strengthening institutional dialogue, and enhancing the role of national human rights institutions on the global stage.

The Ombudsman noted that in Uzbekistan, human rights protection has been elevated to a core aspect of national policy. As a result of reforms, mechanisms for defending human rights and freedoms have been strengthened, and the effectiveness of the Ombudsperson institution has grown. Specifically, consistent efforts are underway to align the Ombudsperson’s activities with the Paris Principles, in line with GANHRI recommendations. The legal framework has been reinforced, regional representatives’ work has been improved, digital solutions have been implemented, and more accessible and transparent mechanisms for applicants have been established.
The importance of developing institutions and strengthening international cooperation was emphasized.
