Fifth Samarkand Forum on Human Rights kicks off

The Fifth Samarkand Human Rights Forum has kicked off. This year, the traditional international event is dedicated to the theme “The 60th Anniversary of the International Human Rights Covenants and the 40th Anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development: Global Partnership for Human Dignity, Equality, and Sustainable Development”.

More than 200 representatives of international, regional, foreign, and national organizations are taking part in the forum both in person and online. Participants include representatives of 10 international and 8 regional organizations, 8 national human rights institutions from foreign countries, more than 30 leading Uzbek and international human rights experts, and representatives of research centers, civil society, the media, and the business community.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Akmal Saidov, Director of the National Human Rights Center of the Republic of Uzbekistan, congratulated participants on the opening of the Fifth Samarkand Forum and expressed his sincere gratitude to all the guests.

He noted that the international conference, traditionally held every two years, has in a relatively short period become a unique international platform for dialogue on pressing human rights issues and for identifying effective solutions.

Tanzila Narbayeva, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Nuriddin Ismoilov, Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and Sabine Machl, UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan, addressed the opening ceremony.

According to the program, the forum included two plenary meetings and seven parallel breakout sessions in Tashkent on the first day. On the second day, the concluding plenary meeting will take place in Samarkand, where participants will discuss and adopt the forum’s final document.
