Preparations for the elections to the parliament and local Councils of people’s deputies, which will be held on October 27 this year, are actively underway.
The parties that are the main participants in the elections have announced their Election Programs, the most important documents of this political event.
It’s worth noting that, as per the electoral legislation, women are expected to constitute a minimum of forty percent of the total number of candidates for deputies nominated by political parties. This is a significant step in the country’s gender equality reforms and in enhancing the role of women in the state and society, particularly in the upcoming elections.
Parties have nominated 75 candidates to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan in single-mandate constituencies (majoritarian system) and 100 by party lists (proportional system), for a total of 175 candidates.
Women make up 43 percent of the candidates nominated by the Movement of Entrepreneurs and Businesspeople – the Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, 43.4 percent (76 candidates) out of 175 nominated by the Democratic Party of Uzbekistan “Milliy Tiklanish”, 44.6 percent of the candidates for deputies approved at the Fifth Forum of the Ecological Party of Uzbekistan, 47.4 percent of the total number of candidates nominated by the People’s Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, and 45 percent of the candidates nominated by the Social Democratic Party of Uzbekistan “Adolat”.
For comparison, in the 2019 elections, 48 women were elected to the lower house of parliament, or 32 percent of the total number of deputies, and following the elections to the Senate, their number was 25 percent.
