The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Vladimir Norov met with the Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification Ibrahim Thiaw, in New York, Uzbekistan MFA reports.

The parties discussed current issues of cooperation in climate change, environmental protection, combating desertification and drought.

According to Ibrahim Thiaw, Uzbekistan’s cooperation within the framework of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification has noticeably intensified in recent years. A clear indication of the growing dynamics of interaction is the identification of the Republic of Uzbekistan as the venue for the 21st meeting of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC-21) in 2023. He expressed the readiness of the Convention Secretariat to provide comprehensive assistance to the Uzbek side in the preparation and holding of this event.

The UN Under-Secretary-General highly appreciated Uzbekistan’s practical measures to overcome the negative consequences of the drying up of the Aral Sea, as well as efforts to green the dried-up seabed.
