Uzbekistan’s progress in key international rankings
17:32 / 2025-01-18

According to the Chairperson of the Senate and the Republican Council on International Rankings and Indices, Tanzila Narbayeva, Uzbekistan improved its position in nine priority international rankings in 2024.

In the E-Government Development Index, Uzbekistan advanced six positions compared to the previous reporting period, ranking 63rd among 193 countries. The country was recognized among 17 nations that progressed from the “high” to the “very high” category in e-government development.

In the World Bank’s Statistical Performance Index, published for 2023, Uzbekistan climbed 17 positions, reaching 62nd out of 217 countries. Over the past seven years, the country’s ranking in this index has improved by 89 places. In the World Bank’s Women, Business, and the Law Index, Uzbekistan made a significant leap of 48 positions, securing 91st place among 190 countries.

The report highlighted Uzbekistan as one of five countries that implemented major reforms in women’s rights and gender equality, achieving the most significant progress.

At the recent meeting of the Republican Council on International Rankings and Indices, alongside recognizing these achievements, important tasks were outlined to improve the effectiveness of work in this area. It was emphasized that as part of the implementation of the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev “On additional measures to improve the system of work with international rankings and indices, as well as strengthening parliamentary oversight in this area” issued on June 19, 2024, parliamentary control over this field needs to be reinforced. The document introduced several new mechanisms, including assigning responsible ministries and agencies to specific international rankings and indices and implementing an annual review of the National Report on Uzbekistan’s Progress in Priority International Rankings and Indices.

In addition to the positive results at the meeting, it was noted that Uzbekistan’s position declined in some indices. Representatives of the relevant ministries and agencies shared their perspectives. It was emphasized that it is necessary to promptly address issues that negatively affect the country’s image and take appropriate measures to improve the situation.

At the meeting, discussions focused on the draft National Report on Improving Uzbekistan’s Position in Priority International Rankings and Indices. Scientific research institutions have been assigned to oversee priority international rankings and indices, and proposals for practical action programs to improve the country’s standings were reviewed.

The Republican Council adopted the corresponding decision.
