Uzbekistan – United States: New opportunities for trade and economic cooperation

As previously reported, today, the President of Uzbekistan arrived in the United States. Before this visit, the government delegation of the country took part in several events in the United States.

In particular, the Minister of Investment, Industry and Trade Laziz Kudratov met with the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce, Deputy Trade Representative, and World Bank Vice President and held talks with the leadership of large companies.

The parties discussed issues of renewing the status of a beneficiary of the GSP program for Uzbekistan, organizing the 7th meeting of the Working Group on Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO. The parties agreed to begin negotiations on creating a joint consultative platform to eliminate barriers to mutual trade and launch the negotiation process regarding the preparation of intergovernmental agreements on the mutual protection of investments and the avoidance of double taxation.

It is also planned to deepen cooperation in green agenda, the development of human capital, support for the private sector, the introduction of public-private partnership mechanisms, reducing the state’s role in the economy, privatization, and the development of small and medium-sized businesses.

In addition, talks were held with the leadership of the American Apparel and Footwear Association, corporations Starlink, Medtronic, Colourizd, Pfizer, B2Gold, Morgan Stanley, Akin Gump, Cerberus Frontier, and other large companies.

The issues of attracting U.S. direct investment to Uzbekistan in projects for the privatization of banks, chemical enterprises, and cellular communication companies, the implementation of projects for the production of innovative vaccines, the construction of solar and wind power plants, and the introduction of advanced software and technologies in the textile industry were agreed upon.
