New York hosted a high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly on “The Role of Zero Waste as a Transformative Solution in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals”.

The event, organized with the support of the Government of Türkiye, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), was attended by the Chairman of the Committee of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the Development of the Aral Sea Region and Ecology B. Alikhanov.

Mr. Alikhanov noted that under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, large-scale measures are being taken in Uzbekistan to fundamentally improve the system of environmental protection, waste management and recycling, and increase the ecological culture of the population.

Mr. Alikhanov noted that last year Uzbekistan joined the Global Commitment to reduce methane emissions to reduce their volume by 30% by 2030.

Following the event, several proposals were put forward on joint mutually beneficial and efficient waste management. The readiness of Uzbekistan to further develop cooperation with the UN and Member States in responsible production and consumption, including the promotion of the Zero Waste initiative, was confirmed.
