On May 25, Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences Shahlo Turdikulova met with the heads of Illumina in Milan, Italy.
Issues of population sequencing at the genome level within the framework of the 1000 Genomes Project, which is planned to be implemented in Uzbekistan, were discussed at the meeting.
This project is the first large-scale genomic research in the history of Uzbekistan.
The project aims at developing personalized medicine, identifying hereditary diseases early, and creating a genetic database specific to the people of Uzbekistan.
The project will use advanced high-precision sequencing platforms such as NovaSeq and NextSeq from Illumina. This, in turn, will allow conducting research in accordance with international standards.
Issues of creating a biobank within the framework of the project, training local specialists, and establishing an international exchange of experience were also discussed at the meeting.
