Geneva hosted a workshop on “Parliamentary engagement on human rights: Identifying good practices and new opportunities for action”.
The event for members of parliamentary human rights committees was organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in collaboration with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The workshop was aimed at identifying additional ways to strengthen the contribution of parliament to the promotion and protection of human rights and to enhance synergies between parliaments and UN human rights mechanisms.
Chairman of the Committee of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis Akmal Saidov presented detailed information on the achievements of Uzbekistan in improving the parliamentary system.
Head of Uzbekistan delegation emphasized the role of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan in human rights protection and drew attention to the main provisions of the Action Strategy on five priority areas of the country, which is a kind of Roadmap for Uzbekistan to implement the Sustainable Development Goals.
Participants became particularly interested in the experience gained by the Parliament of Uzbekistan on interaction with statutory and treaty bodies, as well as UN special procedures in human rights.
