Uzbekistan participates in the UN intersessional event in Geneva
13:33 / 2025-12-05

The UN intersessional event “Transnational Repression and the Erosion of Human Rights: Global Responses and Accountability”, organized by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), was held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

According to the National Center for Human Rights of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the meeting was aimed at deepening understanding of the forms of transnational repression and their consequences for the realization of human rights, as well as at developing effective mechanisms for the protection and accountability of states.

The event brought together representatives of states, international organizations, special mandate holders, and expert structures of the UN Human Rights Council.

Speaking at the event, Akmal Saidov, Director of the National Human Rights Center of the Republic of Uzbekistan, member of the UN Human Rights Committee, stressed the importance of building an international consensus against the practice of transnational repression, which threatens the rights to freedom of opinion and expression, freedom of association, and personal security.

It was noted that protecting journalists and human rights defenders requires systematic interaction between the state and civil society, in line with the Constitution of Uzbekistan in its new edition.

The participants emphasized that transnational repression is becoming increasingly systemic.  In this regard, measures to improve national and international instruments for preventing, monitoring, and responding to such cases were discussed.

Following the event, the participants reaffirmed the need to strengthen global efforts to combat this phenomenon and intensify cooperation within the UN human rights mechanisms.
