Uzbekistan nears the final stage on its path to WTO accession
22:44 / 2025-11-06

In recent years, Uzbekistan’s foreign policy and economic activity have reached a new level.

The country’s influence on the global stage has increased, and balanced, pragmatic cooperation with leading nations is being established. This process implies deeper integration not only into the regional but also the global economic system.

One of the key stages in this process is accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). Uzbekistan is actively negotiating its entry into the organization and is approaching the final stage.

According to the Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on WTO Affairs, Azizbek Urunov, the country has completed negotiations with Canada and Panama. He noted that only three countries remain to be negotiated with before accession. This progress is the result of Uzbekistan’s policy of openness, stability, and rule of law within the international trading system.

The country is implementing consistent measures to establish a system that meets WTO requirements by expanding its export potential, improving the investment climate, and developing a competitive economic structure.

At the same time, Uzbekistan’s pragmatic approach to foreign policy extends beyond the economic sphere. The country actively participates in dialogue with the United States and Central Asian countries within the “C5+1” format. This contributes to strengthening practical cooperation in areas such as security, green energy, transport, and the digital economy.

The United States considers Uzbekistan an essential partner in ensuring stability and economic growth in the region. The number of enterprises with American investment participation in the country has exceeded 300, and significant projects are being implemented jointly with agencies such as USAID, DFC, and USTDA. WTO membership will strengthen these trends, open new opportunities for Uzbekistan as an equal participant in international trade, accelerate the country’s integration into the global economy, and facilitate the entry of national products into the world market.

Joining the WTO is not only a major economic achievement but also a significant political and diplomatic milestone. This step will enhance the country’s international standing.
