Uzbekistan, Latvia parliaments enhance cooperation

The first meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group on Cooperation with Latvia’s Saeima was held in the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Members of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, deputies of the Legislative Chamber and members of the Latvian Parliament, as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps of the two countries took part in the event.

The achievements, as well as issues of further development of inter-parliamentary dialogue, mutual support within the framework of international organizations, strengthening ties in trade-economic, political, legal, cultural-humanitarian spheres, were discussed at the meeting.

Representatives of the parliaments of the two countries, focusing on the scale of the spread of coronavirus in the world, exchanged views on measures taken in Uzbekistan and Latvia to combat it. The need for close coordination and consistent cooperation was noted to address the global socio-economic crisis caused by the pandemic.

The sides expressed mutual interest in further supporting the initiatives of the two countries within the framework of international organizations.

Following the event, an agreement was reached to strengthen the role of parliaments in the comprehensive strengthening of practical cooperation between Uzbekistan and Latvia.
