“Uzbekistan is not a front-line rear, Uzbekistan is a battlefield”
14:41 / 2021-05-09

We remember the heroism and dedication of our ancestors.

On the Day of Remembrance and Honor, we especially fondly remember all those who gave their lives for the Motherland. In the struggle for victory over fascism, Uzbekistan people made a significant contribution with their patriotism, courage and heroism.

At that time, the head of the Uzbek SSR, Usman Yusupov, said that “Uzbekistan is not a front-line rear, Uzbekistan is a battlefield”.

In 1941-1945, Uzbekistan population, including from the Fergana Valley, showed selflessness in the trials that fell to a lot of people. Fergana people have proved their readiness to complete any tasks to win faster. The entire population during the war years did a great job.

From the first days of the war, over 150 thousand people were mobilized from the region to the front. 54 981 of them died, many were missing.

25 of more than 104 industrial enterprises relocated from the enemy’s attack sites to Uzbekistan, were located in Fergana region. One of these enterprises was the Kupyansk Sugar Plant, which was relocated from Ukraine to Kokand in 1942.

As Yelena Kozushko, the spouse of Andrey Kozushko, who was appointed Director of the plant, recalls, in 1943 the construction of plants was hard to carry out. Despite the 40-degree heat in summer, cold winter days and hunger, Kokand residents worked together with builders from Ukraine. The ginnery was built in nine months, although it took 2-3 years to build a facility of this magnitude. In the harsh war years, the Kokand people began to provide the front and the population with sugar. In the first year, 450,000 centners of sugar were produced. The plant operated until 1951 and then was transported to Ukraine.

During the war, more than 30 large enterprises were built and operated in the region. The region supplied the country with 602 thousand tons of valuable industrial raw materials, 18 thousand tons of cocoons.
