According to the Institute for Macroeconomic and Regional Studies (IMRS), in 2022, the trade turnover of agri-food products between Uzbekistan and Iran amounted to $44.9 million, having increased fivefold over the past three years.
In 2022, Iran ranked 13th in the export of agricultural products of Uzbekistan and 19th in imports. Mutually beneficial relations have been established between Iran and Uzbekistan in several areas. The countries signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in Agriculture in September last year at the SCO summit. In October of the same year, an agreement was reached to establish scientific and practical cooperation between the Scientific Research Institute of Vegetables, Melons and Potatoes and the National Association of Potato Growers of Iran.
An essential aspect of the development of cooperation is the transfer of technologies Iran has developed to solve its problems in agriculture. We are talking about increasing fertility through biotechnologies, for example, organic and microbial fertilizers and biological pesticides.
According to the International Trade Center, at the current level of trade and economic cooperation, the untapped potential of Uzbekistan’s agricultural exports to Iran is $22.9 million. Both countries intend to bring the total trade turnover to a billion dollars. To do this, it is planned to sign an agreement on preferential trade and hold exhibitions “Made in Iran” and “Made in Uzbekistan” in both countries.
