Carpet weaving is an industry that produces various types of carpets made of animal wool, vegetable, and synthetic fibers. This area of craft has developed in different countries in different ways. As an industry, it was formed in the XX century. By the same period, special carpet weaving techniques had appeared. This means that the craftsmen gradually moved from hand-made carpet weaving to machine-made.

With the establishment of the Khiva Carpet Factory in Uzbekistan in 1978, carpet weaving has become a moving area of the local industry.

After independence, with the strengthening of international relations, advanced technologies, and equipment from large firms in England, Poland, Türkiye, Germany, and other countries were attracted to carpet industry enterprises, and joint ventures were established.

According to the Statistics Agency, in January-July 2024, Uzbekistan exported 4.3 million square meters of carpets worth $13 million.

In January-July this year, most carpets were exported to Azerbaijan – 1,226.5 thousand square meters, to the Kyrgyz Republic – 1,108.6 thousand square meters, and to Afghanistan – 807.3 thousand square meters.

The list also indicates that Uzbekistan sold 542.5 thousand square meters of carpets to Russia, 328.7 thousand square meters to Kazakhstan, 214.8 thousand square meters to Tajikistan, and 38.7 thousand square meters to Turkmenistan.

Uzbekistan’s carpets have reached the United States, including 14.5 thousand square meters of carpets exported to this country this year and 0.8 thousand square meters to other countries.

The carpet patterns woven by hand in the factories of Bukhara, Shakhrisabz, Urgut, Nurata, Bulungur, and other cities preserve local styles and artistic techniques.
