Uzbekistan is working to ensure gender equality, strengthen the family, empower women, and promote their employment.
As a result, the activity of women in society and their share in various fields and industries is increasing. Thus, currently, the share of women in medicine is 77 percent, in education – 74 percent, in economics and industry – 46 percent, in management – 33 percent, and in political parties – 47 percent.
This was discussed during a dialogue organized by the Senate Committee of the Oliy Majlis on Women and Gender Equality and the UN Office in Uzbekistan and its specialized structures.
Chairman of the Senate Committee of the Oliy Majlis on Women and Gender Equality Malika Kodirkhonova noted that a new law has been adopted aimed at reliable protection of the rights, freedoms, and legitimate interests of women and children, as well as the establishment of administrative and criminal liability for offenses such as family (domestic) violence, harassment.
In addition, the participants spoke in detail about the fact that over the past six years, over 40 laws have been adopted aimed at ensuring gender equality, empowering women, protecting them from oppression and violence, strengthening the institution of the family, including emphasizing the importance of the Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality in the Republic of Uzbekistan until 2030, implementation of the national program and action plan.
It was emphasized that several international rating agencies highly appreciated the ongoing reforms. In particular, in the Open Data Watch Open Gender Data Index, Uzbekistan scored 69.7 points and entered the top 20, ranking 18th among 195 countries.
Following the event, participants developed proposals and recommendations on new approaches, ideas, and initiatives for achieving gender equality in Uzbekistan.
