Uzbekistan delegation attends International Conference on Nuclear Security, held by the IAEA on February 10-14, 2020, at the organization’s headquarters in Vienna, the Ministry of Energy reports.

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi addressed the opening ceremony of the forum.

At the conference, main attention was paid to the reports of representatives of IAEA member countries. Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan Alisher Sultanov delivered a speech at the forum.

As it was emphasized, since independence, Uzbekistan is a consistent supporter of the process of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, as well as strictly fulfills its obligations under the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Agreement between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the IAEA on Implementation of Safeguards.

It was also noted that the Government of Uzbekistan, based on a deep and comprehensive analysis of further development of the energy sector to ensure sustainable economic growth of the country, as well as to meet the growing demand for electricity, developed a proposal on creating its own nuclear energy.

The decision on building the first nuclear power plant served as an impetus for development of activities on creating nuclear infrastructure. Thus, the law “On the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes” was adopted, and legislation on the use of atomic energy is being improved. The Concept for development of nuclear energy in the Republic of Uzbekistan for 2019-2029 and the Strategy for development of human resources for the country’s nuclear energy program were adopted.

The Minister of Energy noted the productive cooperation with the IAEA, within the framework of which it is planned to hold 15 national workshops with participation of highly qualified IAEA experts in the first half of 2020. In January, Tashkent hosted a workshop on the issues of accession to the Convention on Nuclear Safety.

The Republic of Uzbekistan requested the conduction of the IAEA Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) mission in 2020, to be held in October 2020, in order to comprehensively assess the state of the national nuclear infrastructure and ensure safety, reliability and sustainability of the nuclear energy program.
