Uzbekistan and the CIS: A common space for development and security
12:24 / 2025-12-21

On December 21, Uzbekistan joined the Commonwealth of Independent States.

The Commonwealth of Independent States is a significant international regional integration structure for Uzbekistan’s foreign policy. Since its establishment, this structure has undergone a complex process of formation and development to the present day. It brings together mechanisms for cooperation across the political, economic, and security spheres and serves as an essential platform for developing mutually beneficial relations between states. In these processes, Uzbekistan, while safeguarding its national interests, also contributes to regional stability and development.

In the political sphere, Uzbekistan has taken active measures to stabilize relations with neighboring states on border-related issues and to prevent conflicts in the region, actively participated in political consultations, supported joint decisions, and promoted its positions. All of this has strengthened Uzbekistan’s political influence and elevated cooperation with neighboring countries to a new level.

In the economic sphere, within the framework of the structure, Uzbekistan put forward practical initiatives to expand joint economic projects and trade relations with CIS member states. Regional integration was strengthened through cooperation in the marketing of agricultural products with Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, as well as through the joint development of transport and energy corridors. Structural mechanisms were utilized to attract foreign investment and develop the domestic market. All of this has made it possible not only to strengthen the national economy but also to promote economic cooperation throughout the region.

Cooperation in the cultural and humanitarian spheres is particularly significant in Uzbekistan’s activities within the CIS. Cultural exchanges and joint education and science programs have strengthened mutual understanding and trust between countries. Joint education and student-exchange programs between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are being implemented.

In the security and defense sphere, Uzbekistan has demonstrated particular activity in ensuring regional stability and security through the use of joint CIS mechanisms. Joint military exercises, cooperation in combating terrorism and cross-border threats, and coordinated border protection measures have not only strengthened the country’s national security but also contributed to regional stability.

Uzbekistan’s initiatives have not only safeguarded national interests but also strengthened regional integration and established sustained cooperation with neighboring countries.

All of this has become an essential mechanism for ensuring the country’s priorities in regional politics and the economy. In addition, Uzbekistan’s active participation in the CIS framework has strengthened its position in global political processes and increased its influence on the international stage.
