To mark the International Day of Clean Energy, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan, convened a high-level roundtable on market-based mechanisms to accelerate renewable energy development and international best practices in energy transition.
The event gathered senior government officials, international partners, development institutions, and energy experts to explore financial risk mitigation tools for renewable energy projects. Special attention was given to Japan’s experience in transitioning from Feed-in Tariff (FiT) schemes to Feed-in Premium (FiP) systems and competitive auctions, and the applicability of these models to Uzbekistan’s energy sector.
The roundtable was held within the framework of the joint UNDP – Ministry of Economy and Finance project “Promoting Innovative Decarbonization Solutions”, funded by the Government of Japan.
In their opening remarks, representatives of the Governments of Uzbekistan and Japan, alongside UNDP leadership, underscored the critical roles of policy reforms, international cooperation, and private-sector engagement in achieving a sustainable energy transition. The program included a policy brief presentation on Japan’s renewable energy support mechanisms, outlining key achievements, challenges, and lessons learned. Discussions also addressed Uzbekistan’s evolving renewable energy policies, competitive procurement mechanisms, and alignment with climate commitments and long-term development goals.
The event concluded with an award ceremony honoring winners of the National Clean Energy Competition “Let’s Help Our Planet Breathe” among school students, highlighting the importance of youth participation and public awareness in advancing climate action.
