Uzbek parliamentarians brief Latvian colleagues on the progress of constitutional reforms in Uzbekistan

On the initiative of the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Riga, a roundtable discussion was organized on “Prospects for the development of inter-parliamentary relations between Uzbekistan and Latvia”.

The videoconference was attended by the Chairman of the newly created Promotion Group of Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation with the Parliament of Uzbekistan in the Saeima of Latvia Andris Kulbergs, the Chairman of the Committee of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis on International Affairs and Inter-Parliamentary Relations Dilorom Fayziyeva, heads and members of several committees of the Oliy Majlis, as well as the Ambassador of Uzbekistan Kadambay Sultanov.

The parties exchanged views on practical measures of mutual support within the framework of international multilateral structures, further strengthening of mutually beneficial trade, investment, cultural and humanitarian ties between the countries.

The Latvian side was informed about the upcoming large-scale tasks for further deepening the transformations in Uzbekistan. The essence and significance of the constitutional reform were explained. Information was provided on the preparations for the referendum on April 30, with an emphasis on the importance of ensuring the electoral rights of fellow citizens temporarily abroad. The importance of strengthening inter-parliamentary ties with a special focus on achieving practical results was emphasized.

Mr. Andris Kulbergs spoke positively about the progress and scale of reforms in Uzbekistan. The parliamentarian noted that Uzbekistan is one of the most important partners of Latvia in the Central Asian region and Riga is interested in further deepening its partnership with Tashkent in the economy, transport and logistics, education, development assistance. The practical assistance of Latvia in supporting administrative reforms in Uzbekistan was emphasized.
