Turkmenistan assumes CIS chairmanship from January
As of January 1, 2026, the chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States bodies has passed from Tajikistan to Turkmenistan.
According to the CIS Executive Committee, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov previously stated that Ashgabat intends to realize the CIS’s potential most effectively. He noted that the country views the chairmanship as a sign of respect and trust from member states, as well as recognition of Turkmenistan’s contributions to the Commonwealth’s development.
The President of Turkmenistan also emphasized that the country plans to develop a concept for its CIS chairmanship, which will reflect priorities and approaches to the further development of interstate cooperation, taking into account current needs.
Turkmenistan is an associate member of the CIS. The country previously chaired the Commonwealth’s bodies in 2019.
