To address the interrelated challenges of climate change, food security, social well-being
12:25 / 2023-09-15

The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan officially launched a new UNDP project to support self-sufficiency by developing climate-resilient agriculture in the Aral Sea region. This transformative initiative is made possible with $2 million in funding from the Japanese government.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Alisher Shukurov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Uzbekistan Takashi Hatori, and UNDP Acting Resident Representative in Uzbekistan Anas Fayyad Qarman signed the Protocol for the Exchange of Notes and the project document.

The project is expected to benefit more than 376 thousand residents of Khojeyli, Chimbay, Kegeyli, and Nukus districts. Its indirect beneficiaries are estimated at 1.9 million people.

“We are introducing climate-resilient farming methods and helping to strengthen social infrastructure”, Anas Fayyad Qarman said. “Based on the collective experience of UNDP and our partners, we will promote innovative agricultural solutions, including alternative energy sources. Improving access to clean drinking water in remote settlements exposed to climate risks is among the project goals”.

“Despite significant efforts to overcome the Aral crisis, the negative consequences of global warming and climate change complicate the problem. To effectively address the challenge of building a resilient society and promoting human security based on our experience and expertise, Japan intends to continue supporting the Aral Sea region’s sustainable and high-quality growth”, Ambassador Takashi Hatori noted.

In addition, the project will contribute to the study of Japan’s extensive experience in using innovative agricultural technologies and intercultural exchange of knowledge and ideas.
