“The Road to Samarkand. Miracles of Silk and Gold”
On November 23, the Arab World Institute in Paris will host the exhibition “The Road to Samarkand. Miracles of Silk and Gold”, which will feature avant-garde works from the Savitsky Museum in Nukus. This has been reported by the Arts and Culture Development Foundation under the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan.
Almost in the same years when the color and flavor of Morocco inspired Henri Matisse, similar processes took place in Central Asia, where the Turkestan avant-garde emerged.
The still life “Kumgan” (1935) by Ural Tansikbayev resembles French artists' works in the fauvism style. Ural Tansikbayev received his art education in Perm, was a student of I.I. Repin and I.S. Goryushkin-Sorokopudov. In 1928, Tansikbayev visited the Moscow State Museum of New Western Art. Here he first saw the works of Henri Matisse, Paul Gauguin and other European modernists who influenced the formation of Tansikbayev as one of the leading Central Asian colorists.
The exhibition will be held from November 23 to June 4, 2023, at the Arab World Institute in Paris.
