A new version of the Code of Criminal Procedure of the Republic of Uzbekistan is being developed. Tashkent State University of Law takes an active part in discussion of the project. At the same time, foreign experience in this field is important. The roundtable discussion has become a platform for dialogue for further thorough development of the code and the study of foreign practice.

Representative of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Uzbekistan Saydullo Azimov dwelt on the changes, innovations proposed in the new edition of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The new edition of the code provides for the extension of the rights and powers of lawyers. The norms on recognition by courts of orders of other countries and implementation of these orders will be improved.

The participants discussed such issues as ensuring the accused with the right to defense, especially the provision of legal aid to victims, witnesses and other persons, the appointment of a defender by the state, ensuring equality of the parties in criminal proceedings, independence and the right to protect lawyers.

Information has been provided on best practices related to the role of lawyers in criminal proceedings. Views were exchanged on collection of evidence by the defense, making petitions and other ways of providing evidence to the court.
