The President of Uzbekistan notes the importance of the country’s speedy accession to the WTO

On June 5, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev received the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

The practical measures taken to join the WTO were reviewed.

It was noted with satisfaction that two meetings of the Working Group were held in a short period, active negotiations with member countries are underway, discussions on the conditions for supporting agriculture have begun, and work continues to harmonize national legislation with the norms and rules of the Organization.

It was also noted that establishing cooperation is important in developing a green economy, e-commerce, and increasing the export of digital services.

Special attention was paid to increasing Uzbek experts’ potential in regulating international trade. In this context, it was proposed to create a Competence Center in Trade Policy in Uzbekistan with the support of the WTO.

The President of Uzbekistan thanked the WTO Director-General for participating in the roundtable discussion and meeting with students from leading universities in Uzbekistan and congratulated her on being awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy. 

In conclusion, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala supported Uzbekistan’s efforts to join the Organization.
