The powers of the Constitutional Court expand
22:18 / 2024-01-15

On January 13, 2024, the Law “On introducing amendments and addenda to the Constitutional Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan” entered into force.

– In 2023, a major political event, a national referendum, took place in our country, – Senator Narimon Umarov said. – Based on the referendum results, the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan was adopted by popular vote in a new edition. Without a doubt, the changes and additions to the renewed Constitution went down in history as norms that provide solutions to problems that have concerned our people for many years. At the same time, they demanded a review of existing legislative acts and the introduction of appropriate additions and amendments to them. The new law adopted was also developed based on provisions included in the renewed Constitution of our country.

In particular, the Constitutional Court has been entrusted with new powers regarding issuing a conclusion on the compliance of issues submitted for referendum with the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The Constitutional Law “On the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan” has been brought into conformity with the Constitution in the new edition. In this regard, the operating procedure of the structure has been determined.

Thus, the Constitutional Court can take legislative initiatives exclusively on issues within its powers. Judges of the Constitutional Court are elected for ten years without the right of re-election. Previously, the term of office of a Constitutional Court judge was five years at the first election and ten years at subsequent elections.

This law is a practical reflection of the unconditional supremacy of the Constitution and laws.
