The international practice of monitoring closed institutions studied

Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights (Ombudsman) Feruza Eshmatova visits Poland, the Press Service of the Ombudsman reports.

Mrs. Eshmatova took part in the high-level meetings of heads of National Human Rights Institutions in the OSCE region, as well as the regional training “Integrating the Issue of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Detention Monitoring”, which took place on September 7-9.

About 50 representatives from the countries of Central Asia, the South Caucasus, South-Eastern Europe, Central and Eastern Europe took part in this training, aimed at introducing research on the facts of sexual and gender-based violence into the monitoring mechanism of closed institutions.

Ombudsman Eshmatova, as well as the Ombudsmen of several other countries shared their experience in monitoring penitentiary institutions, emphasizing that these visits are carried out with the participation of members of the public and the media.

Views were exchanged on the mechanisms for monitoring closed institutions and recommendations were developed for identifying cases of violence in them.
