The World Society for the Study, Preservation and Popularization of the Cultural Heritage of Uzbekistan, together with the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Abu Rayhan Biruni Institute of Oriental Studies, held a presentation of the book series “Architectural Epigraphy of Uzbekistan”. The event was attended by scientists, specialists, and representatives of several government organizations.
Vice President of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies named after Abu Rayhan Biruni Bakhrom Abdukhalimov, and others noted that the implementation of the project “Architectural Epigraphy of Uzbekistan” is a striking result of the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, aimed at studying, preserving and popularizing the cultural and historical heritage of the country.
It was noted that the project aims to study inscriptions located on historical sites and monuments of the country. To date, 20 multilingual volumes of album books have been published in Uzbek, Russian, Arabic, and English, dedicated to all regions of Uzbekistan. The project “Architectural Epigraphy of Uzbekistan” was launched by the World Society for the Study, Preservation and Popularization of the Cultural Heritage of Uzbekistan with the organizational and financial support of the government of Uzbekistan together with partners and co-organizers.
At the event, Doctor of Historical Sciences Bakhtiyor Bobojonov reported on the research results during the project’s implementation.
– We did not expect our research to reveal more than a thousand names of artisans, architects, artists, calligraphers, and poets. We identified the names of the builders and donors, and in most cases, we understood who erected the monuments and why. We receive flattering reviews about these books from abroad and believe this work will be in demand. Among the publications are album books dedicated to epigraphic inscriptions on architectural monuments of Karakalpakstan, Andijan, Bukhara, Kashkadarya, Navoi, Namangan, Surkhandarya, Fergana, Khorezm, Tashkent regions, and Tashkent, albums dedicated to the historical architectural complexes of Samarkand – Registan and Shahi-Zinda.
According to the Chairman of the Senate Committee of the Oliy Majlis on Science, Education and Health Issues, Odiljon Iminov, thanks to the published books, it was possible to reveal the essence of historical inscriptions on the monuments of the country.
– The publication of albums dedicated to the monuments of each region is a genuinely noble feat, opening new horizons for understanding one’s history and heritage. Now, we have these wonderful publications that help decipher the historical message laid down by our ancestors. I am sure these books will allow every young person to come closer to the roots of their culture, enrich their knowledge, and feel pride in what our ancestors left us as a legacy.
As a result of the project, inscriptions on more than 2,000 epigraphic monuments of Uzbekistan were translated. Experts found, studied, and deciphered a colossal amount of epigraphic material and also corrected and enriched early readings and translations of Turkic, Arabic, and Persian inscriptions.
– We are glad that the creative team of the project managed to implement the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Miromonovich Mirziyoyev, – said the Chairman of the Board of the World Society for the Study, Preservation and Popularization of the Cultural Heritage of Uzbekistan Firdavs Abdukhalikov. – We thank the government for the organizational and financial support of the project, thanks to which 20 volumes of these books will be transferred to each educational institution in Uzbekistan. We thank all the scientists who took part in this large-scale study. Thanks to their work, all monuments were deciphered for the first time in the history of Uzbekistan. It is important to note that this project has no analogs and is clear evidence of how New Uzbekistan treats the issues of preserving and enhancing cultural heritage.
The documentary film Architectural Epigraphy of Uzbekistan was shown at the event. The media event ended with a solemn ceremony in which certificates were presented to representatives of ministries, agencies, and organizations of Uzbekistan for the free receipt of 20 volumes of album books of the “Architectural Epigraphy of Uzbekistan” series.
