Many years ago calligraphers were in great demand. To what extent are they needed in our time?

Abdujalil Ergashev from Samarkand and his family are engaged in calligraphy.

“The art of calligraphy has been developing for many centuries”, says Mr. Ergashev. – I lead a group of calligraphers who carry out their activities as part of the Hunarmand Association in Samarkand region. Almost 50 of my apprentices are working independently in different districts of the region, and a few more – abroad. Many are interested in this kind of art. Unfortunately, I am not able to accept everyone as an apprentice, for this it is necessary to organize training courses. The art of writing is necessary. It will develop even better if you pay more attention.

There are always many tourists in the small workshop of Abdujalil Ergashev in the Ulugbek Madrasah, which has been the center of science since the 15th century. Mr. Ergashev conducts master classes for foreign guests, introducing them to this ancient form of art.
