Tashkent restores its ancient gates
19:02 / 2022-05-20

Until the XIX century, the city of Tashkent was surrounded by a powerful fortress wall, divided by 12 gates.

According to historical data, they were named after the ancient name of the area or direction: Labzak, Takhtapul, Karasaray, Sagban, Chigatay, Kukcha, Samarkand, Kamalon, Beshagach, Koymas, Kokand and Kashgar. Each of the gates was guarded by guards who collected taxes from trade caravans arriving in Tashkent.

Two of the twelve ancient gates of the capital will be restored this year. This has been reported at a meeting held in Tashkent city administration. The participants of the event, together with the working group, discussed the need for a detailed development of the concept of the project and the reconstruction of the exact historical appearance of the gate with the involvement of experienced historians, archaeologists and other experts.

The project to restore the gates of Tashkent is being implemented as part of the decision of the city Hokim on the restoration of 12 ancient gates of Tashkent and the approval of the coordinates of their location of October 18, 2021.
