Representatives of the ministries of justice and agriculture of Uzbekistan, FAO experts, entrepreneurs arrived in Georgia to study the best practices of this country in creating and implementing a system of geographical indications.
The program of the visit, organized with the assistance of FAO and the Rural and Agricultural Policy and Development Institute of Georgia, includes meetings with specialists from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, the National Food Agency and the National Wine Agency, as well as the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia (Sakpatenti).
The legal framework and tools for promoting the system of geographical indications were considered. Members of the Uzbekistan delegation learned how using geographical indications allows to guarantee quality and win customers' trust, while contributing to the expansion of the local market and increasing exports.

The head of the Department of Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Justice of Uzbekistan, Yesemurat Kanyazov, noted that Georgia’s experience in creating an effective system of state institutions may well be applicable in Uzbekistan, where this type of intellectual property has yet to be formed.
“Uzbekistan, like Georgia, has a great potential for manufacturing goods and products that are closely related to the territory of origin, local technologies and knowledge, which allows us to apply the best international practices of various types of intellectual property for territorial development”, says Yesemurat Kanyazov. – We intend to use the acquired knowledge and experience in Uzbekistan.
