Sapalli Culture presented in China
13:59 / 2026-01-01

An academic presentation based on the monograph “The role of fire-related structures and hearth vessels in the life of the population of the Sapalli culture” by Komil Rakhimov, a historian-archaeologist and researcher at the Samarkand Institute of Archaeology, was held in China’s Gansu province.

The Sapalli culture is among the most ancient Bronze Age cultures in Central Asia and was primarily widespread in Surkhandarya oasis. This was identified through archaeological research at the Sapallitepa site. Sapallitepa reflects the early stages of settled agriculture and urban development.

During the presentation, metal smelting facilities identified at Sapalli culture monuments, along with their structures, functions, and chronological characteristics, were presented on a scientific basis. In particular, metal smelting furnaces, traces of workshops, and archaeological evidence related to metallurgical processes discovered at the Sapallitepa and Jarquton sites attracted significant interest from foreign specialists.

During the presentation, scholars from the Gansu Provincial Institute of Archaeology discussed the prospects for comparative studies between the metallurgical traditions of the Sapalli culture and Bronze Age monuments in China. This, in turn, provides a strong foundation for future joint research projects.
