Samarkand on the eve of the SCO Summit
19:27 / 2022-09-12

On 15-16 September 2022, Samarkand will host the 22nd Summit of the Heads of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Member States.

The heads of state will meet face to face for the first time in the last three years. This major forum will become the best opportunity to discuss the accumulated bilateral, regional and global problems.

New Airport

All the necessary infrastructure has been prepared for the Samarkand Summit, a new modern and high-tech airport has been built.

The design of the project demonstrates a combination of the past and the present. The terminal building of the air harbor has the form of an open book depicting the fundamental work of the great scientist Mirzo Ulugbek “Ziji Jadidi Guragoni” (or “New Guraganov Astronomical Tables”). Constellations are depicted on the roof of the airport. This once again reminds residents and guests of the city of the great contribution of the famous astronomer Mirzo Ulugbek to global science and civilization. The height of the building is 175 meters, width – 25 meters.

Modern technologies have been introduced to create tourist amenities: a new type of passenger and cargo registration and a comfortable service system after boarding is established.

Silk Road Samarkand Tourist Center

A new tourist center has been built for SCO guests and tourists, which will become the main venue for the events of the summit.

The main construction sites occupy 135 hectares. On both banks of the famous rowing canal, there is an ethnographic town Boqiy Shahar, a winery, hotels and a huge three-storey congress hall, where meetings of the leaders of the SCO countries will take place. The area of the latter is 2800 square meters.

An artificial lake for fishing has been created on the territory of the center. The central square pleases tourists with a musical fountain, guests can settle in the EcoVillage town.

Eight international hotels consisting of 1200 rooms will open their doors in the multifunctional tourist center Silk Road Samarkand. Two hotels are included in the five-star category. Meanwhile, the Samarkand Regency Amir Temur Hotel has become the first and so far the only one in Central Asia that is part of The Leading Hotels of the World.

Samarkand Rowing Canal

This is another local attraction. The length of the canal is 2180 meters, the width is more than 150 meters. It fully complies with international competition standards.

It hosts various international competitions. In particular, it was decided that in 2025 the Asian Youth Games will be held in Uzbekistan, and the rowing tournaments – in Samarkand.

The SCO Samarkand Summit will become the fourth forum of the Organization held in Uzbekistan. The venue of the previous SCO Summits, which were held in Uzbekistan in 2004, 2010 and 2016, was only the capital.
