Roundtable discussion to be held on reducing and preventing statelessness in Central Asia

On March 26, a regional roundtable discussion on reducing and preventing statelessness in Central Asia will be held at the initiative of Uzbekistan.

The event will be organized within the framework of the implementation of the commitments of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the implementation of the initiatives of the President forwarded at the 46th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, as well as to support the call of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres to take decisive measures to reduce the number of stateless persons.

It will be attended by representatives of relevant state bodies of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, including the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Internal Affairs, Justice, State Migration and Registration Services, State Statistics Committees, as well as national human rights and civil society institutions dealing with issues of citizenship and statelessness in the region.

The event is aimed at reviewing international standards for the reduction and prevention of statelessness, assessing overall progress towards the elimination of statelessness in Central Asia in the context of the #IBelong global campaign to eliminate statelessness, reviewing the results of the High-level Segment on Statelessness and the implementation of the commitments made by the Central Asian countries.

It is planned to exchange best practices and important achievements in the region, as well as discuss existing gaps and necessary legislative amendments, review practices that do not correspond to the current level of development.
