On August 29, participants of the 9th meeting of the global Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN), which started in Tashkent, visited Samarkand.

The forum participants got acquainted with the work carried out in the tourist village of Konigil and the mahalla “Konigil” of Samarkand district to reduce poverty and ensure employment. They also visited the households of local residents.

Konigil is one of the first tourist villages in Uzbekistan. Handicrafts have been developed here since ancient times. Therefore, tourism and handicrafts are the region’s main socio-economic development drivers. Relevant programs are being developed and implemented in this direction. Tourist infrastructure facilities have also been created in the region.

Foreign guests and experts of international organizations, using this mahalla as an example, got acquainted with the system of work of “mahallabay” and “khonadonbay”, and also received detailed information about social protection registers. During the dialogue with local residents, they discussed employment in handicrafts, agriculture, and tourism.

The meeting participants visited a tourist village, where they got acquainted with the activities of the private enterprise “Konigil Meros”. Here, they observed the production of world-famous Samarkand paper based on ancient traditions and studied the technology of obtaining vegetable oil.

During the visit to Samarkand, the guests also examined the city’s historical and cultural monuments and attractions.
