Parents and children: principles of relationship

Specialists of the Institute for Macroeconomic and Regional Studies tried to find out what is the participation of parents in the education of children and the choice of their future profession.

They conducted a sociological survey among parents with children aged 10 to 22 years. It was attended by 2,100 people. Among them, women accounted for 72%, and men – 28%. According to the level of education – 4.6 percent of respondents have an academic degree, 36.1 percent – higher education, 21.2 percent – secondary and 38.2 percent – specialized secondary education.

According to the survey results, 28.7 percent of respondents live together with elderly parents. When asked who influences the upbringing of their children the most, parents answered as follows: mother (41.6%), father (27.4%), grandparents (9.3%), sisters and brothers (8.1%), teachers (7.3%), strangers (3.7%) and other relatives (2.5%).

The majority (80.2%) of those who took part in the survey want their children to become famous highly qualified specialists in a certain profession. 7.9 percent of respondents answered that they dream of financial security for children and the availability of real estate.

Almost all parents participating in the survey discussed the future profession of their children among themselves, in more than 88 percent of cases their opinions coincide. 7.2 percent of respondents said that the opinions and desires of the spouses about the future profession of their child are fundamentally different.

The respondents' answers showed that parents also pay attention to the opinion of their children when planning their future, 86.3 percent of participants approved their child's choice, 11.1 percent partially approved, 1.3 percent were not satisfied with their child's choice.

According to the respondents' answers, it was revealed that young people are interested in professions in the fields of medicine (15.5%), education (9.7%), information technology (9.3%), manufacturing (8.2%), entrepreneurship (7.7%). As expected, the majority of girls choose the profession of a doctor (16.3%) and a teacher (13.8%). And young men choose IT specialties (18.7%), then a doctor (13.7%), an economist (13.2%) and an entrepreneur (11.2%).

Whatever the child's career decision, 81.6 percent of parents said they would accept it willingly, 12.7 percent noted that if there was a negative reaction to this decision, they would be asked to change it, explaining all the pros and cons.

55.7 percent of the parents surveyed raise their children, demanding obedience and providing assistance, if necessary, 36.2 percent fully control, and 6.4 percent give full freedom to their children.
