The Sixty-Seventh Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference, held on 25-29 September at the Agency’s headquarters in Vienna, Austria, was attended by representatives from 177 IAEA Member States.
According to the IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, at the 66th IAEA General Conference in 2022, a record majority of states (51 countries) supported the role of nuclear power in achieving their goals for climate change mitigation, energy security, and sustainable development.
At the conference, it was noted that more and more countries are expressing interest in nuclear energy and acting on this interest.
According to IAEA, today, the 410 nuclear power reactors operating in 31 countries provide approximately 369 gigawatts of installed capacity, supplying some 10% of the world’s electricity and around a quarter of all low-carbon electricity. There are 58 reactors under construction in 31 countries; these are expected to provide about 60 gigawatts of additional capacity.
A Scientific Forum entitled Nuclear Innovations for Net Zero was held as part of the conference. The forum brought together scientists and policymakers to discuss how nuclear energy will help mitigate the effects of climate change and move toward a world with zero greenhouse gas emissions.
The Uzbekistan delegation also attended the event, which expressed gratitude to the IAEA for its support in the development of nuclear infrastructure.
