New findings in Akhsikent
20:54 / 2023-11-03

Archaeologists, under the leadership of Professor Abdulhamid Anorboyev, conducting scientific research in Akhsikent, have finished excavating the foundations of the open-air museum.

A foundation trench was dug for the open-air museum in August-September this year. It is 2.1 meters in width, 1.5 meters in depth, and 40 meters in length. Its south-north direction starts at 23.5 meters. In this part, there is a defensive wall dating back to the 9th-13th centuries, another part of which was identified from the 19th excavation site.

The ancient and medieval defensive walls of the 19th century were also built on a natural hill. However, they lost their importance for some period. Only in the first quarter of the 13th century a weak defensive wall was built on it.

The underground waterway and defensive walls from the second town to the western suburbs were determined from the actual dimensions of the raw bricks used and the bricklaying style in October this year.

“During these researches, a 1.2-meter-high part of the wall was opened and investigated”, says archaeologist Shukrullo Nasriddinov.  “The distance between the strong wall of the previous period under it was 0.8 meters. This interval consists of a less dense layer. It consists mainly of waste, granular soil, smaller amounts of baked and raw brick fragments, and soil. Ceramics from the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century were found in the layer”.

It is worth mentioning that many pottery items, pipes, and coins of different periods were found during the excavations.
