Tashkent hosted an international roundtable discussion on “Promoting the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration”.

The event’s main organizers were the National Center of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) mission in Uzbekistan. Its participants included representatives of relevant government agencies, national human rights institutions, scientific and academic circles, civil society institutions from Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, as well as experts and IOM staff from the headquarters in Geneva (Switzerland), regional office in Vienna (Austria), Global Migration Data Analysis Centre (GMDAC) and the organization’s offices in Central Asia.

First Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Director of the National Center for Human Rights Akmal Saidov, and IOM Sub-Regional Coordinator for Central Asia Zeynal Hajiyev welcomed the participants of the event, heads of representative offices of this international organization in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

A video was shown on the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. Analyzing the content and importance of this document, experts noted its inextricable connection with the primary UN documents and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The best practices for developing a national system of safe, orderly, and legal migration were also presented, the practical experience of advanced countries was studied, and prospects for promoting dialogue and exchange of experience on migration issues between Central Asian states were considered.

The Regional Program to assist the Central Asian countries in implementing the Global Compact, consistently implemented with the financial support of the Migration Resource Allocation Committee of the International Organization for Migration, was discussed in detail.
