Matteo Mecacci: “Human rights education is a long-term investment”
15:05 / 2022-12-06

Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights Matteo Mecacci, participating in the Global Education Forum, shared his impressions:

“The member countries of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe are well aware of the importance of human rights education. They strive to ensure that their citizens have sufficient knowledge about human rights and freedoms. We are increasingly aware of the need for the broad involvement of young people in building a safe society for citizens. Unfortunately, despite all international and national calls in this direction, in some countries in the OSCE area, human rights education is not at the proper level. In recent years, almost no attention has been paid to the inclusion of such education in curricula, the creation of textbooks for students and students of different ages.

Human rights education is a long-term investment that requires constant attention. It should not be replaced by short-term projects that often do not yield the expected results. There are two important aspects: it is necessary to raise awareness and knowledge of people on this topic and ensure that human rights education is included in the general education system.

I believe that the forum in Samarkand is very important for further developing human rights education throughout the region. Education contributes to the formation of capable and purposeful citizens who contribute and will contribute to the improvement of society and the development of democracy.
